Food insecurity is on the rise

According to the Greater Boston Food Bank, Across Eastern Massachusetts, nearly 700,000 (1 in 8) are struggling to put food on the table. This problem is even worse for children. The pandemic has caused food insecurity among children to rise 117% in Eastern Massachusetts, so that now 1 in 5 children live in a food-insecure home. According to Feeding America, food insecurity has risen for both the Commonwealth of Massachusetts (59%) and Eastern Massachusetts (66%) compared to pre-COVID levels, giving our state the unfortunate distinction of having the most significant projected annual increase in food security in the country in 2020.

Volunteers Impact

Last year we had many challenges as well as opportunities. We found ourselves in a unique position due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In the past, we have successfully served our neighbors and those beyond our borders to address emergency needs. Our services include:

  • Food distribution.
  • Supporting inmates and inmate families.
  • Supporting girls in Africa to acquire high school education.
  • Love Week.
  • Providing free medicare.
  • Teaching English as a second language.

Unlike any other year, 2020 was special because as the economic pressure caused by the pandemic reached new levels, the large population lost their sources of income and found themselves in a transitional point. Good Hope, Inc stepped up through our Foods Program and established a Foods Drive Through. At the peak of the pandemic Good Hope Foods through our dedicated volunteers led by Kristen Klopotoski, had an opportunity of servicing close to 2,000 families per month from our past number of 600 families.
