The Northshore of Boston has experienced never-before-seen levels of food insecurity. According to the Greater Boston Food Bank, across Eastern Massachusetts, nearly 700,000 (1 in 8) are struggling to put food on the table. This problem is even worse for children. Since the beginning of the pandemic in 2020, food insecurity among children has risen 117% in Eastern Massachusetts, so that now 1 in 5 children live in a food-insecure home. According to Feeding America, food insecurity has risen for both the Commonwealth of Massachusetts (59%) and Eastern Massachusetts (66%) compared to pre-COVID levels, giving our state the unfortunate distinction of having the most significant projected annual increase in food security in the country in 2020.
